Signing Up as a CDPAP Personal Assistant in New York State

Becoming a CDPAP (Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program) personal assistant in New York State is a straightforward and enriching opportunity. Unlike many other healthcare roles, no certification or licensing is required, making it easy for family members or friends to take on the role of a personal assistant.

Personal Assistant Eligibility and Requirements

Who Can Be a Personal Assistant?

Anyone can be a personal assistant except your legal spouse, designated representative, or parent if you are under 21. You must be at least 18 years old and have valid work authorization if you are not a U.S. citizen.

Can I Be a Personal Assistant for My Family?

You can be a personal assistant for your parents if they have Medicaid and live in New York. You can be a personal assistant for your child only if they are over 21 years old. You cannot be a personal assistant for your legal spouse.

Can I Be a Personal Assistant for Others?

You can be a personal assistant for your neighbor or sibling if they have Medicaid and live in New York. Patients and Personal Assistant caregivers can reside in the same home.

Do I Need Certification to Become a Personal Assistant for the CDPAP Program?

No certification is required to become a personal assistant for the CDPAP program. However, you need to complete a “Pre-Employment Physical” form, tuberculosis testing, and provide MMR records. Orientation is electronic and can be completed at home, with assistance available via email or at the resource center.

Are Caregiving Hours Flexible?

Yes, hours are flexible, allowing you and the patient to create a schedule that works for both.

How Do Personal Assistants Track Their Hours?

Personal assistants can clock in and out using an app, making it fast and simple to track hours.

What If There Are Payment Issues?

Our staff will help resolve any payment issues immediately and professionally.

What About Sick Time and Backup Personal Assistant?

Personal Assistants can accrue up to 56 hours of paid sick time each year. We recommend each consumer sign up at least two personal assistants for backup.

Payments and Benefit

How Are Personal Assistants Paid?

Personal assistants are paid every Friday, provided their hours are submitted properly. DailyPay is also offered, allowing personal assistants to get paid after every shift. Payment varies by location and insurance plan, and exact rates can be obtained by calling us.

How Many Hours Can I Work as a Personal Assistant?

The number of hours you can work depends on how many hours the consumer is approved for and how many hours they want you to work. There is no minimum number of hours required, and you get paid for the hours you work.

What Benefits are Available to Personal Assistant?

Benefits include paid sick leave, direct deposit, mailed check, or pay card options. Overtime is not offered, and if more than 40 hours a week are needed, another personal assistant will have to be hired. While you can care for more than one consumer, you cannot work for two consumers simultaneously and must split your hours between them. Travel costs are not reimbursed under this program.
